Wii Game - Dancing with the Stars Review, nintendo console

We got our hands on a copy of Dancing with the Stars for the Nintendo Wii, and it’s my distinct honor to bring you our review. Right off the bat you’ll notice that the game is very much geared towards young females. Before you ever play the game you are greeted with a game menu that is themed with hues of purple and pink, which give it a very friendly yet very feminine feeling.

Since the Wii isn’t as powerful as its competitors in terms of sheer graphics muscle, I won’t be overly critical on the graphics. That said, even for a Wii game I expected the “Celebrities” to look a little better.

wii - Come into the - House of the Dead - nintendo console games reviews

The reign of terror continues on the Nintendo Wii, and by that I mean more horror-themed games continue to be announced for the console. This time the title is a new incarnation of the classic (to some…not so much to myself) “House of the Dead” franchise. Cubed3 has a ton of screenshots for the upcoming game such as the one below. House of the DeadIt doesn’t look like the graphics have improved a whole lot since other House of the Dead entires, but what do you want from House of the Dead? It’s not a name that is often associated with quality (except of course for the two films…obviously that was a joke).

Wii Has the Most Downloadable Games - nintendo console reviews

June 21st, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Wii

Out of the Wii, the PS3 and the XBox 360, the Wii has the largest number of game titles available for download according to the staff of GamePro. Wii Shop ChannelSure, XBox has a greater number of original titles, but they’re more expensive and if you ask me, part of the draw of owning a Wii is having access to so many old classics again. GamePro says in an article at PCWorld: 84 percent of downloadable 360 games have online functionality compared with 45 percent of PS3 titles and zero percent for Wii games. Only 12 percent of downloadable games are original titles, says EEDAR, especially given Nintendo’s lopsided contribution of older games. In terms of median game prices, PS3 titles are the cheapest at $5.99, followed by Virtual Console games at $6, and Xbox Live Arcade games at $10, the most expensive of the three. Furthermore, 80 percent of the downloadable content on the PlayStation 3 is free compared to just 29 percent on Xbox 360. It would be nice if Nintendo would include some online playability with some old school NES games. It would be cool to play Contra with my brother who lives 12 hours away. He’d probably still steal my lives after he died though.

WiiWare Developer Details Come to Light, nintendo console games reviews

Back in June, Nintendo announced it’s WiiWare service, which the company described as “a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel”. Now some developer guidelines for WiiWare were mentioned in a podcast at IGN, which Leo Chan at Neo Seeker discusses:

Prospective WiiWare developers must first be officially licenced by Nintendo in order to release titles for download. They can then approach either Nintendo or a third party publisher in order market their title for production/release. In both cases the other party will stand to receive a cut in potential profit; IGN believes Nintendo’s asking price is 35 percent for any WiiWare title they help publish. Developers estimate the average production budget for a WiiWare lies at under $100,000 USD. Licensed WiiWare developers are limited to releasing one downloadable WiiWare title per month. Additionally, Nintendo is reportedly enforcing a filesize limit on downloadable WiiWare titles; the current maximum is 40MB, but this is not apparently set in stone.

Alone in the Dark with Your Wii - nintendo console games reviews

After previously being announced for the XBox 360 and the Playstation 3, it has been announced that the Wii and the PS2 will also be getting a new incarnation of the survival horror title Alone in the Dark. Alone in the DarkI have only played one game in this franchise (Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for the Sega Dreamcast), and I found it to be ridiculously difficult. Maybe I just suck, but I didn’t get very far before finally giving up. Money well spent. Hopefully this one will be more on the entertaining side. Of course Wii players will be able to utilize the Wii remote and Nunchuk for a more interactive gaming experience. No matter what, I am glad to see that Nintendo is continuing to have more and more horror-themed titles heading its way.

Nintendo Promises Better Wii Stock for Christmas

June 21st, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Wii

Nintendo is having to do a little “damage control” after certain third-parties are complaining about the shortage of Wii hardware and software stock. To help curb such outlandish thinking, they’ve promised more stock for the upcoming holiday season. Play.tm has an interesting quote from Nintendo of America boss Reggie Films-Aime…

“As every publisher talks about shifting over to Wii it’s creating this crush of production right now at our factories for software,” Reggie Fils-Aime said during an investor conference. “What we’ve done is to ramp that capacity up and work with the publishers to ensure that their best titles get into the marketplace and have a productive holiday. This is a very short-term situation that is effectively going to be resolved in a course of three week’s time.”

X-Play Video Preview: Mario Kart Wii - nintendo console games reviews

June 21st, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Wii
Check out the Mario Kart Wii video preview below… it comes to us from the good folks over at X-Play.

Nintendo hates Pirates. Okay, not actual Pirates… I’m speaking of Piracy, you know music/movie/software/game piracy. Nintendo has made it well known that some consoles will have problems playing the new dual layer SSBB game, because of a dirty lenses. But, what they fail to mention is that the game won’t also play for anyone who has installed a “mod chip” in their Wii. According to dBTechno… those who have mod chips in their Nintendo Wii consoles are not able to load up Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as the game will simply not load. An interesting thing to note though, is that people who were able to download and burn a copy of the game on a black dual-laver DVD, were able to load up the game fine. So maybe Nintendo’s attempt to help thwart piracy wasn’t a total success… but expect their tactics to get much much harder to work around. My $.02 - SSBB is is one of the few games in a very long time that I see being worth the sticker price… and one of the few games on the Wii that is actually fun, so do yourself, and Nintendo, a favor - go out and by this title (if you can find one).
