Will Physics be the Next Big Thing in Pc Gaming?

April 26th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in Articles

Written by Sandra Prior Realism has been a driving force behind gaming, but games themselves are nothing without the hardware they run on. Without graphics cards we would not be able to experience the immersive virtual worlds we have been spoiled with. There is however a problem with realism; its very resource intensive.

The more game developers try to create more realistic worlds the more current technology is pushed to its limit. If you ask average Joe what realism in gaming is all about they would probably tell you about the graphics, but any gamer knows graphics are nothing if the world they render is skin deep. This is where physics comes into play. Physics have been present in games in some form since the start. Take Pong for example; two paddles on each side of the screen bounce a ball between them, if the ball lands at a certain angle with the paddle going at a certain speed then the resulting bounce will be relative to those variables.

Dead Space Wii is a first-person on-rails shooter

February 26th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in Wii News

In a decision which has immediately split the internet clean in two, EA’s Wii take on hi-def horror-actioner Dead Space - titled Dead Space: Extraction will be a first-person shooter on rails, a la House of the Dead: Overkill.

The sensible people like me think this is a good choice - the Wii’s a great console for arcade-like experiences, and it means it’s not just a watered-down, graphically-inferior version of a 360/PS3 game. Hello, Dead Rising: Chop ‘Til You Drop. Various others claim it’s a disaster, that rail shooters are [expletive deleted] and that EA deserves to rot in hell and that the Wii is rubbish and LOL.

While in one way it’s a shame we’re not getting a third-person adventure, Extraction would never have stood the comparison, especially considering how reliant its predecessor was on state-of-the-art graphics and sound design. Judging by the video above, the on-rails approach has allowed EA to really push the Wii, and create something which looks both great and pretty bloody scary.

Disaster - officially (maybe) not a disaster after all

September 25th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Wii

Proper’ Famitsu has reviewed Disaster: Day of Crisis, with the score coming in at a healthy 31/40. Which makes me very optimistic about the game, which should be in my possession by this time on Friday at the very latest. Early impressions will be forthcoming. I’m expecting a fairly arcadey experience with a decent story and hopefully pretty good replay value with the score-attack feature.

In other Famitsu news, the Cube remake of the original Resident Evil is next up for a bare-bones ‘Wii-make’. Which might not ordinarily seem like good news, but then it could well hint that we might just see that remake of Resident Evil 2 that we’re all clamouring for. After all, what other possible reason could there be to re-release both Resi Zero and REMake on the Wii with nothing added?
