December 24th, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

When the economy took its most recent dirt nap many analysts thought that the video game industry was bulletproof. Unfortunately, after EA announced their most recent closing of EA Black Box, it seems that the analysts were very, very wrong.

An interesting piece from the Economist points to the Wii as a potential cause for EA’s financial hardship. Sound like a stretch to you? Check out their reasoning after the cut.

Rumor: Factor 5 Wii Prototype Engine

December 24th, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

When Factor 5 originally revealed plans to create games for Wii, they revealed that they had been using a modified version of the Lair engine. Lair may not have been that great gameplay wise, but it certainly was a graphical marvel. Well, apparently, a video has leaked of the Wii tech engine, showcasing mountainous terrain. If Kid Icarus was in development by Factor 5, you could bet that this would have been the technology powering it.

Review: Avoid, Avoid, Avoid SPRay

December 24th, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

What The Game’s About
When an evil queen invades the land and smashes the sunshine away, it’s up to Spirited Prince Ray (”SPRay” for all of the acronym lovers out there) to don the magic crown that summons little spirits that spit and spray various fluids such as water and vomit in order to recover the crystals that make up the sun and defeat the queen. Players guide Ray and his spewing companions across several worlds within the kingdom to solve puzzles, rescue citizens, gather new abilities, and collect items.

Ray’s companions begin the game with the ability to spray water and vomit. Water washes away enemy goo and nourishes flowers that are planted almost everywhere (make a flower bloom and it’ll erupt with what appears to be snot for some reason), while vomit sticks to floors and makes things such as invisible bridges visible when fully coated. Fluids are also used to trigger switches, bathe enemies, and draw symbols with the Wii remote among other things. Swing the Wii remote to whack nearby objects and enemies with Ray’s staff. New tricks are added to Ray’s arsenal as the game progresses.

Suda 51 Discusses ‘No More Heroes 2′ on the Xbox 360

December 24th, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

The original No More Heroes was a Wii exclusive game that in true Suda 51 fashion, brought some interesting ideas to the table. Unfortunately, the game didn’t sell like some expected, which put even a sequel in question. When the sequel was eventually announced, this led some to wonder if it would be making its way to the Xbox 360.

When speaking with GameSetWatch Suda discussed this very topic.

What Nintendo’s Effort to Make Dragon Quest Succeed Means

December 21st, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

Following the announcement that Dragon Quest X would be headed to the Wii, Nintendo Co. Ltd. President Satoru Iwata made the following statement, as quote by 1up:

“With the release of Dragon Quest IX, there are two things I’d like to make reality. The first is to build a thriving Japanese game market together with Dragon Quest that rivals the West’s. The second is to form a strong tag team to promote Dragon Quest overseas. At Nintendo, we were able to popularize the Brain Age series overseas, which was said to be unmarketable. I want to increase the number of people worldwide that understand the appeal of Dragon Quest, which represents all Japanese gaming culture…even if that only turns out to be a single person. I’m looking forward to working together with Mr. Horii and Square Enix.”

To that end, Chris Kohler of Wired Game|Life has taken an exhaustive look at the significance this holds.

Media: MadWorld Wishes You a Happy, Uncensored Holiday Season

December 21st, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

MadWorld Holidays, second verse, same as the first.

But without all that bothersome yellow tape this time. Which is funny, because I thought Europe, where this trailer is from/for, was more uptight about that stuff in their games.

EA Says Wii Graphics are “Not Broadcast Quality” When Making Commercials

December 21st, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Wii Games

Oh, EA, what trouble will you land in next?

In a recent UK ad for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, Tiger Woods is depicted swinging a Wii remote with a Tiger Woods on a television screen following his movements. And Virtual Tiger looks good… but perhaps a little too good, say angry consumers who complained to Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority.
